In a monumental legal victory, nearly 20,000 taxi and for-hire vehicle drivers have secured a $140 million settlement from the City of New York. This settlement resolves the longstanding issue of unjust license suspensions by the Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) without due process.Â
Fernando Mateo, spokesman for the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers (NYSFTD), stated, "For decades, we've witnessed drivers being unjustly stripped of their livelihoods without a fair hearing. This settlement is a testament to the resilience of our drivers and the relentless advocacy for their rights. It's a clear message that due process cannot be overlooked." For years following the lawsuit, NYSFTD repeatedly warned the TLC that its practices were unjust and demanded they end this immediately. Today, I am sure the message has been heard loud and clear—drivers will no longer tolerate this type of abuse.
Steven Rivera, President of NYSFTD, added, "This settlement not only compensates for the hardships endured but also sets a precedent ensuring that such injustices do not recur. It's a significant step towards restoring faith in the system for our drivers."
The settlement underscores the necessity for fair treatment and due process for all drivers, ensuring that their rights are protected, and their livelihoods are not unjustly jeopardized.
