A Bronx rideshare driver was fatally shot early New Year’s Day in the Tremont section of the borough, marking what authorities believe may be New York City’s first homicide of 2026.
Police say the victim, 55-year-old Isac Issa, was found inside his vehicle near the intersection of Morris Avenue and the Cross Bronx Expressway shortly before 7 a.m. on January 1. Emergency responders arrived after receiving reports of a vehicle stopped in the roadway and discovered the driver suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators are examining whether the shooting followed a dispute or minor crash involving another vehicle. According to law enforcement sources, surveillance video appears to show a man approaching the driver’s car before it pulls away, followed by several individuals running after the vehicle moments later. The motive for the shooting has not yet been determined, and no arrests have been announced.
Family members and colleagues described Issa as a hardworking driver who had just completed an overnight shift and was believed to be heading home when the incident occurred. The killing has renewed concerns about safety for for-hire drivers across the city.
In response, the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers announced a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of those responsible. Advocacy groups are again calling for stronger protections for rideshare and livery drivers, particularly during late-night and early-
morning hours.
The NYPD is urging anyone with information to come forward as the investigation continues.
